Alchemix Finance is not risk-free. Like-kind borrowing avoids liquidation caused by the underlying asset's price movement alone, but v3 introduces pooled MYT strategy exposure and liquidation conditions tied to backing losses. A 0% interest headline does not eliminate smart contract risk, fees, depegs or the possibility of collateral loss.
What the 95% liquidation threshold means
The official liquidation documentation describes a 95% LTV threshold. ETH or USDC price volatility alone does not trigger liquidation when collateral and debt move together. A fall in MYT backing can: the docs cite exploits, negative strategy returns and oracle-valued strategy assets trading below their underlying value.
Consider 9,000 debt against 10,000 collateral, starting at the 90% borrowing ceiling. If collateral backing falls to 9,400 and debt is unchanged, LTV becomes 9,000 / 9,400 = 95.74%, above the documented threshold. The boundary occurs at 9,000 / 0.95 = 9,473.68 collateral, so a little over 5.26% backing loss can cross it. Actual liquidation execution also depends on earmarked debt and the protocol's checks.
For comparison, 5,000 debt against the same 9,400 collateral has 53.19% LTV. Lower leverage provides more room in this simplified scenario; it does not make the underlying strategy safe. Our redemption calculations explain why collateral and debt also change during normal operation.
Strategy risk and yield uncertainty
MYT allocates collateral to yield strategies. Bugs, loss events, valuation problems and withdrawal constraints can affect the position. The live strategy mix and yield need checking in the official app; this article does not assign invented numerical probabilities to risks. A low or zero yield means less replenishment of collateral, even if scheduled redemptions continue reducing debt.
Inspect whether displayed yield includes performance fees, how withdrawals work, and which protocols the selected vault uses. Past yield is not a promised future rate. The official fee schedule also distinguishes yield fees, redemption fees and liquidation-related fees.
Depeg and redemption risks
alAssets can trade below face value on an exchange. A hypothetical 2% discount on 5,000 alUSD means gross sale proceeds of $4,900, not $5,000. The Transmuter offers a documented target 1:1 redemption after its applicable term, but the official documentation says bad debt can scale down payouts. Early exits also have specific rules and fees. Read the redemption and pricing examples before interpreting a discount as a risk-free opportunity.
Audits are evidence, not insurance
Use the official Security & Audits page to inspect reports and security resources. Check the reviewed contract scope and whether later upgrades or adapters are covered. This guide does not claim independent code review, guarantee bug-bounty coverage or invent a safety score. Audits reduce uncertainty about reviewed code but cannot guarantee every future interaction.
A practical risk checklist
- Open the app through the official site and never disclose a recovery phrase.
- Check the selected chain, supported underlying asset and MYT exposures.
- Stress-test LTV against collateral backing losses before borrowing.
- Review redemption terms, fees and whether debt is earmarked.
- Start small and verify transaction results and remaining balances.
Follow the deposit and repayment checklist for position checks. If you are comparing lending models, our DeFi lending trade-off guide explains why lower interest and lower risk are not the same claim.
Stress-test assumptions, not just one favorable outcome
The loss calculation above holds debt constant so the effect of a backing decline is visible. Real balances can also change through borrowing, settlement and collateral movements. Use a stress case to understand which assumptions matter, not to predict the exact sequence of a future event. An apparently comfortable LTV today is not a guarantee that the same buffer will remain available later.
Consider what you would need to do if backing weakened while market liquidity also became unfavorable. Could you obtain an accepted repayment asset, and do you understand which debt portion you would be settling? Avoid assuming that you can always respond instantly at an attractive price. The repayment checklist identifies the information to inspect before taking action.
Understand correlated dependencies
Dividing an allocation across named strategies does not automatically make all their risks independent. Strategies may depend on related assets, contracts, price information or liquidity conditions. Review the actual allocation and documentation rather than inferring diversification from the number of entries in a list. This guide does not claim to know the live composition of every MYT vault.
The underlying asset is also part of the exposure. Like-kind debt accounting addresses a specific relationship between collateral and debt; it does not establish the safety of a stablecoin or protect the dollar value of an ETH holding. Keep those portfolio questions separate from the narrower question of whether a position crosses its LTV threshold.
Assess security evidence with the right scope
When reading an audit, identify the reviewed version, contracts, date and limitations. A report may describe unresolved findings or assumptions about integrations. Later changes can require additional review. The presence of a report is useful evidence, but its conclusion should not be extended to assets or code outside its stated scope.
Apply the same discipline to incident reports and safety claims. Check whether a source describes this version and market, and whether it explains what changed afterwards. An old incident is not by itself proof of a current vulnerability, while the absence of a known incident is not proof that no vulnerability exists. Use official security resources without interpreting this educational guide as an independent audit.
Define what you will monitor
A practical review includes collateral backing, debt, LTV, strategy exposure, applicable fees and the available exit route. Token prices alone are incomplete, and a declining debt balance can conceal simultaneous collateral outflows. If you cannot explain a change, compare transaction records and documented mechanics before attributing it to yield or normal repayment.
Return to the balance reconciliation examples for ordinary accounting movements and the liquidity and redemption guide for exit risks. Monitoring does not eliminate exposure, but makes the obligations and limitations of the position easier to understand.
